“Pennyocracy” at Park Festival, June 2008

How would you allocate the Federal Budget?

COMPARE SAP NEIGHBOR'S BUDGET TO THE PRESIDENT'S
At the Neighbors for Peace table at June's SAP Art Festival we gave visitors 10 pennies to place in into columns where they thought the federal budget should be spent. They could put the pennies on 10 different budget items or weight options with multiple pennies.

Almost 500 people participated. Althought they weren't given detailed info about the budget categories, it is clear that the neighborhood vote supports a foundation for renewal.

Festival goers placing pennies on the chart

Festival participants placed their 10 pennies into columns representing categories of the federal budget.
Blue bars showed the president's priorities. Columns full of pennies showed SAP neighbors' priorities.

People gave the challenge a lot of thought. Families discussed it among themselves.

The table attracted a lot of people, and a lot of discussion. Almost 500 people added their 10 cents' worth.
Some categories needed cups to hold the overflow for all the pennies.
